Who Was Man Of The Match? Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United advanced to the Champions League round of 16 thanks to goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho, as Michael Carrick’s temporary term began with a 2-0 victory over Villarreal at La Ceramica on Tuesday.

Ronaldo has scored in each of United’s five Champions League games so far, scoring in either a late victory or an equaliser in each of the last four games in Group F.

The first half was pretty level, with neither side having clearcut chances until United goalkeeper David de Gea made a spectacular stop, clawing Manu Trigueros’ attempt over the crossbar.

In the second half, Carrick brought on Fernandes and Rashford as Villarreal began to take control of the game, and the substitutes resulted in a dramatic shift in momentum as United began to gain control of the game.

After Fred had tackled Etienne Capoue, Ronaldo took advantage of a defensive mix-up to lob the ball over Geronimo Rulli as the game drew to a stalemate.

Cristiano Ronaldo is our Man of the Match yet again on an important Champions League night.

Sancho scored his first goal for United when he rifled in a shot following a counterattack involving Rashford and Fernandes.

Carrick would have been pleased with how sturdy United’s defence looked as they secured their first clean sheet of this Champions League season after allowing four or more goals three times in their previous seven games.

United’s first Champions League away win came in October 2020, when they defeated Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes.
