Who was Man Of The Match? Leroy Sane
Benfica’s hope to secure points against Bayern Munich at home in the midweek ended disastrously. Nicolas Otamendi and Co may have crushed Barcelona 3-0 in their last UCL outing but Bayern remained too strong for them.
Die Roeten dismantled the Portuguese side 4-0 on the road. The home side wasted several decent chances at the beginning with at least three opportunities going begging. Unfortunately, they turned hapless when Bayern started to score. Leroy Sane netted a brace, followed by Everton’s own goal and none but their Bayern’s prolific striker, Robert Lewandowski.
The Polish forward, however, was not named the man of the match. It was awarded to Leroy Sane. The 25-year old attacking midfielder scored two goals in this fixture, one of which was by a curling free kick. Unlike his normal position in Bayern, where he often features as the winger, he was deployed for the number-ten role and did shine. Sane excels at dribbling, finishing and pace which suits the role.
Such skills enabled him to penetrate Benfica’s back line, read game and eventually be able to register two goals here. Julian Nageslmann seems to be ready to unlock the former Manchester City man’s potential to do better this season.
