Who was Man Of The Match? Thiago Silva
Chelsea continued to portray their stellar progress under Thomas Tuchel as the European Champions ran rampant in the London Derby against Tottenham Hotspurs. Goals from Thiago Silva, N’Golo Kanté and Antonio Rüdiger secured a 3-0 victory over their London Rivals. For a goal, and leading the Chelsea backline into securing a clean sheet, Thiago Silva is today’s Man of the Match.
It was a game of two halves. Two halves of Chelsea’s display of their potential to be serious title challengers. Spurs, in front of a packed (and spectacular) Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, looked a threat all throughout the first half, and seemed more likely to score with their crisp passing and movement. However, the solid Chelsea defence held on and the teams went back to the dressing rooms at the end of the first half with the scores level 0-0.
Thomas Tuchel seemed to have picked a nerve at half time, as Chelsea played scintillating football for the next 45 minutes. Thiago Silva scored the game’s first goal in the 49th minute, scoring off a corner from Marcos Alonso. N’Golo Kante added the second, with a tiny bit of fortune, as the Frenchman’s shot took a huge deflection off Eric Dier, and ended in the back of the net. Chelsea had stomped their authority on the game by then, and while Spurs tried to salvage something, they were unable to come up with the good to even shake the Chelsea team. Instead, Antonio Rudiger added a third goal in injury time, to add salt to the Tottenham wounds. This was Tottenham’s second consecutive loss of the season, who now travel to the Emirates next week, to face Arsenal in the North London Derby.
Antonio Rudiger’s goal meant Chelsea went top of the table, and lead Liverpool on head to head basis, having scored away at Anfield earlier in the season. Chelsea had survived a Liverpool storm that after a professional and solid performance playing much of the game with 10 men, and salvaged a draw. They swept Tottenham aside today, and now host Manchester City next weekend. Thomas Tuchel’s men have a real chance to send out a statement to the league, or even the continent, if they managed to beat City at Stamford Bridge. In current form, Chelsea should be considered favourites to beat City not just in the game, but also to the Premier League title.
