Who Was Man Of The Match? Barcelona 0-3 Bayern Munich
Who was Man of the Match: Robert Lewandowski.
Memories of last year’s 8-2 demolition were still fresh in Barca fans’ minds, when they were drawn against Bayern Munich in the Group E. Barcelona faced Bayern Munich at Camp Nou in the opening fixture of the group in front of their own fans. Home support couldn’t help Barca much, as Bayern demolished Barcelona yet again, this time only with a modest scoreline of 3-0. Robert Lewandowski played a huge role for Bayern and is therefore our Man of the Match.
It was Thomas Muller, who turned 32 two days ago, who opened the proceedings in the first half, with a deflected shot beating Ter Stegen and hitting the back of the net. It was a freefall for Barca since. They hosts managed to keep Bayern away till half time, but conceded soon after the second half began. This time, it was Robert Lewandowski, who was present in the right place at the right time. The Polish striker with his poacher instinct was present to put the ball in the back of the net, after Jamal Musiala‘s strike hit the post. Lewandowski wrapped things up, and completed the demolition of this Barca side, as he was present in the box, in the right place, as yet another Bayern attack first found the post, before the ball finding Lewandowski’s feet, followed by the scoreboard changing from 2-0 to 3-0.
While this was yet another feather in Bayern Munich’s cap, and a first for new manager Julian Nagelsmann, it was another low for Ronald Koeman‘s Barcelona team, who seem lost and without any leadership on the pitch, especially after the departure of their talisman Lionel Messi. Barca next travel to Estádio da Luz to play Benfica in the Champions League in a fortnight, and will play in the very stadium they were destroyed 8-2 by Bayern Munich just over 12 months ago.
