10-man Manchester United started their Champion League campaign with a shocking 2-1 defeat against the Swiss champions BSC Young Boys after an injury-time winner.
Ole Gunner Solskjaer, in his 3rd season with United, is expected to win a trophy this season, especially after the significant summer acquisitions of Ronaldo, Varane, and Sancho. This is not the way he would have hoped to kick start Europe’s most prestigious tournament.
United started the game brightly with another Champions League goal for the homecoming Ronaldo who met a delightful cross from Bruno Fernandes. Young Boys looked threatening on the counter and had some good moments in the first half.
The struggle started for United when Aaron Wan Bissaka was shown a straight red card after a vicious tackle in the 35th minute. United brought on Varane at halftime and looked compact for most of the game until Young Boys squared with an equalizer scored by Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu, our Man of the Match.
It could have been a character-building night for United players as they were heading to a hard-earned draw until a late error from Jesse Lingard, who misplaced a back pass and gave it straight to Jordan Siebatcheu, scoring an injury time winner. It will be a hard one to take for Solskjaer and co.
